March Madness is always a crazy time of the year, hence the name, but this March was record-breaking with its, well, madness. The NCAA Basketball Tournament starts with 64 teams, then goes to 32, then 16, then 8, then 4, then 2, and then finally, 1. The National Champion. This year, the National Champ was UConn, the number 4 seed in the tournament. They crushed San Diego State, the number 5 seed, in the championship game to win it all. The Final Four this year was pretty crazy, consisting of UConn, SDSU, Miami, and Florida Atlantic University. None of these teams were expected to make it this far, but that’s what March Madness is all about. But before we could get to the wildest Final Four in years, we had to start at the very beginning. The round of 64 contained many, many upsets, and absolutely decimated my bracket. The biggest one of all was 16th seeded Fairleigh Dickinson University upsetting No. 1 Purdue. This was only the second time in NCAA history that a 16th ranked team beat a 1st ranked team. So this March truly was one for the record books. The first game of the entire tournament was No. 4 UVA versus No. 13 Furman, and the Paladins beat the Cavaliers by 1 point. What a way to kick off the tournament! Another huge upset came when Princeton took down Arizona, who was the second seed in this year’s March Madness. But enough with all this talk about the tournament. What about the teams who didn’t make the cut. One in particular stood out. UNC. They were the runner ups in last year’s tournament, and were ranked #1 in the preseason. But by the time March Madness came around, they had fallen from grace and were no longer eligible to play in the tournament. So I guess what I’m getting at is March Madness this year wild. I mean nobody could have seen that Final Four or any of those upsets coming. But that’s the beauty of March Madness. You never know what’s going to happen next.
