On Saturday, January 21st, at around 10:22 pm, Huu Can Tran went into Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park California, and killed 11 people. During a Lunar New Year celebration, Tran showed up with a firearm and only stopped firing after Brandan Tsay got the gun away from him. The following day on Sunday, police stopped a van and found Tran dead inside from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Huu Can Tran had met his ex-wife at the dance studio and had once been a regular there. She said that he was quick to anger and filed for a divorce in 2005. Tran’s mental health history is still being looked into since the motive for the shooting is not clear yet. He was arrested in 1990 for unlawful possession of a firearm,

At least 11 people died and some more were hospitalized. It likely would’ve been worse if not for Tsay who got the gun away, shown by security footage. Tsay saw the gun and jumped on Tran, finally getting the firearm away after about 40 seconds. His actions were acknowledged by President Joe Biden and were awarded the medal of courage from the Alhambra Police Department.
