Olympics: The Shib Sibs
by Ivy Wang
As you all know, the 2018 Winter Olympics are taking place in PyeongChang right now. With all the excitement around this years games you may (or may not) have heard of the “Shibs Sibs”. The Shib Sibs are Maia and Alex Shibutani who are an ice dance team. What makes the Alex and Maia unique is the fact that they are siblings.
Typically in ice dance, judges look for chemistry which is hard to show in sibling pairs but the Shibutani siblings definitely make up for it with their amazing skating. This year, Maia and Alex won bronze in ice dance! They also helped team USA win bronze in team figure skating. The pair danced to a medley of songs by Cuban bandleader Perez Prado for their short dance and “Paradise” by Coldplay for their free dance.
Before the Olympics, I had never heard of the Shib Sibs even though they were on the 2014 US Olympic team. But after watching Alex and Maia skate in this years Olympics, I decided to look them up, and instantly became obsessed.
Maia, 23, and Alex, 26, have been skating together for over a decade. Maia started skating when she was 4 and Alex said in an interview that he saw how much fun she was having and decided to join too. The Shib Sibs aren’t like most siblings. They are always together but always seem to be getting along and are each other’s best friend.
The Shib Sibs are World medalists, US champions, and now Olympic medalists too. They have Youtube channel, called the Shib Sibs, where they post vlogs and other fun videos. My favorite is their most recent video called “The First Time We Met” and it’s the cutest thing ever. Alex and Maia have the cutest videos of themselves when they were little that are posted on Youtube and their Instagram. If you haven’t already, you should check out the Shib Sib’s!
