Dear readers,

Welcome to the 2018-2019 year in Retrospect! We can’t wait to get to know each and every one of our writers and hope that their voices will help you to find your own. Retrospect is an extraordinary platform to take risks, discover yourself through writing, and find your unique role in the myriad personalities and experiences of our community. Each of us hopes to engage and learn from all of our writers and to inspire our readers to compassionately take on new perspectives, listen to voices across the aisle, and perhaps eventually join our community of writers.

This year, we hope to create a diverse and energetic community filled with curious students. We seek informed dialogue and aspire to create a space where students who find themselves in a minority—whether it be politically, socioeconomically, or socially—feel free and are encouraged to speak their minds and engage meaningfully with the controversy that may come as a result.  Our goal is to create a truly safe space where respectful (but possibly uncomfortable) dialogue eclipses angry and prejudicial rhetoric—on both sides. On this note, we will leave you with the words of American novelist Toni Morrison: “The ability of writers to imagine what is not the self, to familiarize the strange and mystify the familiar, is the test of their power.”
