by Audra Keresztesy, Brett Parsons, and Molly Gleydura
In light of recent political events, some members of our community may be either celebrating or struggling at this time. Maybe you’re just bored or looking for a way to procrastinate. Movies are a great way to distract yourself from the real world and enjoy an evening with friends, family, or just by yourself. Here are some of our suggestions!
For many people it has been an emotional couple of weeks and one of the best ways to move past all of these emotions is to have good old-fashion cry! These movies definitely will bring you to tears.
- Dead Poets Society
- The Notebook
- What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?
- My Girl
Strong Female Lead
No matter your political opinion, we missed an opportunity to have the first female president. Many people are heartbroken over the way women have been talked about and ridiculed in this election, and it can be hard to hear especially for young women. If you are feeling unsupported or anxious about the results of the election and you need something to believe in, here are some movies with amazing female characters who defy gender stereotypes and society and who are all around amazing!
- She’s the Man
- The Sound of Music
Whether you’re celebrating, crying, or just bored one evening, check out this list of movies for all your entertainment needs! You can have a laugh, jam to some memorable music, and find some joy in a world that can become your own, even if it’s only for 2 hours. You’re faith in humanity will be restored after just one movie, but we recommend watching multiple for the desired result. If none of these titles grab your attention, you can check out the “Comedies” tab on Netflix for related titles.
- School of Rock
Classics (from the good ole’ days)
This election was stressful and emotional for all involved, no matter what party you belong to. If you need to escape the commotion surrounding the media for the past year and need a reminder of ~simpler~ times, indulge yourself in some of the classic movies from the good ole’ days.

- Grease/ Grease Live
- 16 Candles
