Dorrance Dance (April 7th – 9th)
“Dorrance Dance honors tap dance’s uniquely beautiful history in a new and dynamically compelling context. The theatrically witty company pushes tap forward into the 21st century, rhythmically, aesthetically and conceptually. Street, club and experimental dance forms-all of which are American dreams-awake to the sound of furious rhythms, and find their boundaries missing. Tap dance, America’s most long-standing indigenous jazz vernacular is here to receive its due respect. The work of Dorrance Dance has garnered critical acclaim, including winning a Bessie Award for “blasting open our notions of tap”. Performing at the intimate space of Cleveland Public Theatre, the performances will feature fun-filled tap like you’ve never seen it before!” –Dance Cleveland
Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (April 29th – 1st)
“Presented by Playhouse Square in partnership with DANCECleveland, the powerfully emotional and energy filled dance of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is back in Cleveland! Founded two years after DANCECleveland, visionary choreographer Alvin Ailey sought to bring African American cultural expression and the American modern dance tradition to the world. From a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater was born. That performance nearly fifty years ago changed the perception of American dance. The company has performed and gained the adoring love of dance audiences in over 48 states and 71 countries on six continents. Under the artistic leadership of Robert Battle, the company has expanded their repertoire with works by Ronald K. Brown, David Parsons, Rennie Harris, Bill T. Jones and many others. Dance just doesn’t get better than this.” –Dance Cleveland
