Presidential Candidates #1: The Front Runners

by Rosalie Phillips

There are a ridiculous number of candidate, some of whom are pretty ridiculous themselves. This series is meant to give you a quick overview of the candidates’ stances on a few big issues of today. I also provided my (slightly left leaning) political commentary, a slogan, and a link to their website. Whether you can vote or not it is important to be weary of the people who want to lead our country right now.

THIS WEEK: We will tackle the big players right now, Ben Carson, Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders

[That which is marked “RPOV” is “Rosalie’s Point of View”]

Ben Carson

SLOGAN: Heal. Inspire. Revive.

TITLES: Neuro-Surgeon

RPOV: I think Ben Carson is not really a presidential candidate. He has no political experience, which is scary because Washington is full of career politicians who he needs to know how to deal with and he lacks an understanding in important topics. He also didn’t call out Trump when he claimed vaccines caused autism which is ridiculous and said he would look into shutting down mosques if president. No thanks.

POLICY OVERVIEW

Foreign Policy

  • An admitted novice on foreign issue, often wrong in facts
  • Pro-Israel (thinks the Obama administration is not properly supporting)
  • Supports arming Ukraine against Putin’s rebels

Environment:

  • Believes in human caused climate change but is against government regulation of greenhouse gases

Economy:

  • Wants a flat tax on all Americans less than 15%
  • Wants to eliminate the IRS
  • Wants to raise social security age
  • Wants a “balanced budget amendment” to the constitution to make politicians see the national debt more seriously

Same-Sex Marriage:

  • Expressed aggressive comments against gay marriage but then rescinded and said he was open to the idea of legal recognition if it is not called marriage

Immigration:

  • Says he would allow legal immigrants to apply for permanent residence
  • Tighten border security without a wall

Trump

Donald Trump

Titles: Chairman and President of The Trump Organization

RPOV: No.

Foreign Policy:

  • Has made a foolproof way to quickly get rid of ISIS but won’t divulge it because he doesn’t “want the enemy to know what I’m doing”
  • Pro-Israel
  • Says the US is not a respected country and therefore holds little influence in the Russia Ukraine conflict

Environment:

  • Calls climate change a hoax to raise taxes

Economy:

  • Believes trade with China is killing the dollar
  • Tax relief for middle class
  • Simplify tax code

Same-Sex Marriage:

  • Says same sex marriage isn’t his “thing” but his views are “evolving”

Immigration:

  • Wants to build a wall
  • Opposes efforts to give legality to immigrants here already illegally

Hillary

Hillary Clinton

SLOGAN: This starts with you

TITLES: Former senator and secretary of state

RPOV: Hillary Clinton is a bad ass. I’m not saying she should or should not be president but she definitely conveys an era of bad assness. I think she would make a pretty good president and is probably my pick of the democrats at this point. She may have trouble getting out from under her e-mail scandal but she has high name recognition and a load of political experience. She is however struggling with coming off as cold and robotic, which could hurt her in the long run.

Foreign Policy:

  • Very Pro-Israel
  • Decrease dependence on Russian oil with European allies to lower Putin’s power
  • Supports Iran deal and strict upkeep of it
  • Continue partnership with Iraqi troops
  • Fix ISIS without ground war

Environment:

  • Believes in climate change caused by humans and supports federal action to reduce greenhouse gases (cap and trade)

Economy:

  • Tax breaks for families
  • Supporting small business through tax breaks and easy access to capital

Same-Sex Marriage:

  • Supporter

Immigration:

  • supports Obama’s executive action on immigration reform
  • providing a path to citizenship
  • targeted security focused on those whose pose a violent threat

Bernie

Bernie Sanders

SLOGAN: A political revolution is coming.

Titles: US vermont senator, former house of reps

RPOV: Feel the Bern. I think a liberal old white man is kind of refreshing, but in calling himself a socialist he has rendered himself relatively unelectable. That word is such a negative buzzword in America today that he has alienated himself beyond return.

Foreign Policy:

  • Believes border countries such as Saudi Arabia should combat ISIS
  • Backs Obama’s sanctions against Russia
  • Pro Iran deal

Environment:

  • Believes in climate change caused by humans and strongly support both policy and research into reducing emissions

Economy:

  • Raise minimum wage to $15
  • Increase government spending on infrastructure to generate jobs
  • Opposes Trans-Pacific Partnership
  • Break up large banks

Same-Sex Marriage:

  • Strongly supports

Immigration:

  • pass legislature to reduce the vulnerability of undocumented immigrants
  • Supports the DREAM Act
  • increase wages paid to guest workers
