As this year comes to a close, it is time to start thinking about what courses we take next year. Something I have learned at HB is that a class you think isn’t for you might end up being one of your favorite courses. Even if you don’t consider yourself an “English person”, there are many reasons to join HB in Retrospect next year!
1) Research and write about a topic that truly interests you
If you happen to come across a topic that grabs your attention and you want to learn more about, HB in Retrospect is a great way to research and write about it. For example, if you recently come across an ad showing a race for breast cancer downtown, you can write about this and spread the word. HB in Retrospect is a way for the HB community to communicate their recent discoveries, and bring supporters to a certain cause.
2) Get to know more students and teachers
Some of the most interesting articles in HB is Retrospect are interviews with the student body and teachers. Since students and teachers are the most important aspects of the school, getting their opinions on topics is essential to making the school run smoothly. HB in Retrospect is a great way for you to act as the middleman and interviewer in this dynamic.
3) Give your opinion
There is an option to write articles in which you give your opinion on topics that strike a personal note with you. For example, if you just can’t stand the parking situation at HB, you can write an article stating how we should change it. Not only will your voice be heard, but you will also create conversation throughout the school and act as a change agent.
4) Show your artistic talents
Recently I have been seeing more and more art on the HB in Retrospect website. Because the website is open to the world, anyone could see your meme, cartoon, or photograph. This is a great way to showcase your talent to a large audience and publish your work.
5) Work with your fellow HB students
Many articles are collaborative, in which you work with others, sometimes in different grade levels, on a piece. Group projects will always be apart of life, and HB in Retrospect is a way to gain non-intimidating practice in this area. Working with others can also be a very rewarding experience, as your joint effort usually results in an outcome much larger than you could accomplish alone.
For these reasons and many others, I encourage all of you to join HB in Retrospect next year!
