Interviews with HB’s Spring Captains (again)
by Ellie Cascio and Taylor Herrick
Spring has finally arrived at the Hath!!
We interviewed the captains (again!) of Softball, Lacrosse, and Track and Field on their spirit animals, pre-game rituals, and more!
Softball: Maren Butler, Maggie Philbin, and Kenzie Berk
Lacrosse: Katie McCann, Madeleine Danes, Libby Cha, and Molly Coughlin
Track and Field: Abbey Langenderfer, Sophie Richards, Lauren Battle, and Mar Mar Irefin
- How many years have you been playing your sport?
Maren Butler (softball): Since the 7th grade
Maggie Philbin (softball): This is my 8th year.
Madeline Danes (lacrosse): About 6 years
Abbey Langenderfer (track): 10 years
Mar Mar Irefin (track): I’ve been running track since Freshman year, but I started in middle school because I thought it was the best way to meet boys (it’s not).
Sophie Richards (track): This is my third year.
- What is your position/event
MB: Center field and but I previously played shortstop.
MD: Low defense or defensive mid
AL: 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 4×400, 4×800, 4×1600, and the Distance Medley Relay.
MI: I throw shot and disc, but I’m currently pursuing a hurdling career on the side. Transitioning from no cardio since the Middle School mile to one of the hardest events out there is a bit of a challenge, but the coaches are great and my team is super supportive.
SR: 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, and the 4×400.
- Do you have any pregame rituals?
MP: I have my hair braided on the bus to every game.
MD: Katie McCann and I have a handshake that we have done before each game
since Freshman year. I also like listening to my music to get in the right mindset.
AL: I wear a specific pair of socks for each race, eat scrambled eggs, listen to rap, and
eat pasta the night before.
MI: Besides listening to a killer playlist on the drive over, I always try to give my
teammates pep talks so I can distract myself from the pressure of my own competition.
SR: I drink this energy mix with water and warm up with my team.
- If you could play a different sport at HB, what would it be?
MB: I also play Field Hockey so definitely that!
MD: If I could play a different sport besides Lacrosse (and Soccer), I would play
basketball because they get the best gear and train very hard.
AL: I would like to row or play Soccer.
MI: I’d play Basketball because I always lose when I play HORSE, and the skills would come in handy if I ever had to play a pickup game against LeBron.
- What is your spirit animal?
MB: A tiger????
MD: My spirit animal is Dwight Schrute (does that count?).
(Yes, Madeline, it does count.)
AL: An Elephant
MI: I love the buffalo, but if we’re being realistic, I’d have to go with the cheetah (or
