Featured Clubs: Harry Potter Edition
By Anna Lietman and Evie Schumann
This past Wednesday, we had the chance to speak with all three presidents of the Harry Potter Club: Emma Simmons, Halle Clemens, and Katie McCann (Remi Salenger, who granted herself the title of club secretary, was tragically unavailable to offer her insight). They shared with us details about their infatuation with J.K. Rowling’s series, along with information about their plans for the future of the club.
What do you have planned for this year?
Quidditch, trivia, making wands, acting out parts of the books, watching and discussing movies, quidditch education, quidditch strategies, and more quidditch.
Why should we join your club?
Why not? You will learn to love it. Enter the magical world that is Harry Potter.
Any initiation process?
We used a sorting hat to place members into the four Hogwarts’ houses. Although we were deeply upset when someone asked how to pronounce Gryffindor, we see this as a unique learning opportunity.
How you do feel your club is perceived by other members of the HB community?
Praised. They are all jealous.
How do you motivate others to get involved/excited?
We avidly update our Twitter account and have many followers. Probably the most followers of any HB club.
*After extensive research, we disproved this false claim. HB’s spirit club has a whopping 127 twitter followers, surpassing the 113 people following the Harry Potter Club account.
Do you like the books or the movie better?
The books. Without a doubt. Our unanimous favorite is the sixth novel of the series, Half Blood Prince.
Do you require your club members to have extensive knowledge, watch the movies, read the books, own a wand, wear capes, know spells, etc.?
It’s not required, but strongly encouraged.
Which characters do you best identify yourself with? Why?
Wise Halle relates most to Dumbledore’s leading role. Despite Emma’s protests, Katie proclaimed herself Harry Potter, The Chosen One. Emma, contrarily, admitted to being clueless and somewhat challenged, much like Neville Longbottom.
Do you believe in magic?
Yes. Did I try levitating something? The answer is yes. I also believe in Hogwarts. I have to accept that I’m a muggle and move on with my life. Still, I will persevere—I’m running into that wall (Platform 9¾) as many times as I have to. I will concuss myself to death or enter, whichever happens first.
If you could choose between Hogwarts and Hathaway Brown which would you pick? Why?
Hands down, Hogwarts. At Hogwarts, I would be free to be myself. Mostly because of the magic. Dragons. Quidditch. And it’s co-ed. Plus cloaks > Pixie pants.
See you at platform 9¾. And the next Harry Potter Club meeting. (Which is coming up, by the way… expect to see an email soon. Or a letter delivered via owl. You never know.)
