Laptop Stickers: A Snapshot of Personality

By: Sue Roy

We all are required to have laptops at the Upper School and we’ve all seen the various designs students have put on their laptops to make it their own. I decided to walk around the hallowed halls of HB and found just a few examples of how some creative people have truly shown themselves on their laptop covers.

  1. Why so many Laptop Stickers? Is this you (like personality wise) on a laptop?

I don’t really know why I have so many.  Most of them were given to me by other people (mainly my sisters, who went to school in New York, Maine, and Vermont) and since I don’t want to be a person with a million bumper stickers on my car, they wind up on my computer.

  1. What’s your favorite one?

My favorite one is probably the Joshua Web one, which has a picture of a bunny holding a grenade.

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

Again, it would be the bunny/grenade sticker.  It’s from a show I went to with my friends at the Grog Shop a couple of years ago.  The sticker itself is an advertisement for one of the opening bands, which was decent but not really anything to write home about.  But I still remember how fun the night was—we were in the front row, and since the Grog Shop doesn’t have a raised stage, we were basically standing face-to-face with the musicians.  It was a great night, and the sticker reminds me of it.

  1. Any sticker you see yourself removing soon/ aren’t sure why you put up?

Some of them have been on there for a really long time and are starting to lose their stickiness, so I’ll probably have to remove them pretty soon.  It’s okay, though, because I have more to replace them with!

  1. Why so many laptop stickers?

I put stickers on my laptop because I thought that it would look cool

  1. What’s your favorite sticker?

My favorite sticker is the blue mountain that says “jones” on it because it’s a snowboard company and I snowboard and because it has my last name on it.

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

The red sticker that is kind of zig zagged is a company my dad used to go skiing and I like how no one else has the same sticker as me.

  1. Any sticker you see yourself removing soon/ aren’t sure why you put up?

No.

  1. Why so many Laptop stickers? Is this you on a laptop?

It seemed like a fun endeavor. The stickers are all meaningful to me, so yes.

  1. What’s your favorite sticker?

Either the retro cat or the “I stand for the arts”

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

The Senegal flag sticker has quite a story. I had to barter to get this for 300 CFA on the streets of Dakar, next to a rackety white van with two removable seats. I tried for 200 CFA, but he was firm on his prices.

  1. Any sticker you see yourself removing soon/ aren’t sure why you put up?

Probably the pink and orange octopus because it doesn’t have that much sentimental value for me.

I think they look cool, they let you express yourself. Kind of like a little window into who someone is just by looking at their computer.

  1. What’s your favorite one?

The one from my camp (probs just b/c I love camp)

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

The one that says Senegal, which I got from Senegal obviously while I was on the HB trip from last spring break. We bought it on the side of the road in Dakar and I had to negotiate the price!

I have a Toms sticker. I don’t even own Toms anymore, but I’ll probably just let it stay.

  1. Why so many Laptop Stickers? Is this you (like personality wise) on a laptop?

Well, I have a huge laptop (17 inches) so I figured I needed something to cover the front of it! I think it’s pretty close, since I have to like something to buy the sticker!

  1. What’s your favorite one?

My favorite one would have to be the Moonrise Kingdom sticker, since it’s from one of my favorite movies and it acts as a promotion to watch it. So go watch it!

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

It’d have to be the Phoenix Coffee one, since I wasn’t actually sure if I could take the sticker (they were in a basket on one of the counters), but I decided to just inconspicuously take one.

  1. Any sticker you see yourself removing soon/ aren’t sure why you put up?

Probably the Life is Good one: it was the first one I put on, during my ‘life is good phase’ (I had a variety of t-shirts too), so I might cover it up soon.

Last year, I started to notice that every store I walked into sold stickers. I didn’t really think much of it at the time and thought they were a waste of space I would eventually throw out. Then, my dad brought me one that he said to put on my bulletin board, but I was feeling creative so I instead put it on my computer. Then, I just started accumulating stickers, rearranging them once in a while, to make my laptop look a little more appealing. All of my stickers have a story or memory attached to them and therefore they represent my personality in a sense that each one is very personal to me.

  1. What’s your favorite one?

My favorite one is the “Black Dog” sticker I got in Martha’s Vineyard over the summer. It’s a really cute sticker (in my opinion) and it reminds me of really good memories I had on my vacation.

  1. If you could choose one sticker and tell us a story about it/ its origins, which one would it be? (If you wouldn’t mind, could you share the story?)

I got the Iceland sticker in Iceland this summer. It kind of brings back memories of being terrified to go on a trip where I knew no one as a freshman but ended up having the best time. I bought it near the biggest glacier in Europe (Vatnajökull) and it cost 455 krona. That’s the equivalent to about 4 dollars here in the U.S. Anyway, I remember only purchasing this sticker from a specific store and the entire store was filled with a group of French tourists trying to figure out the currency as well. It was the longest I’ve ever had to wait but it was worth it. People ask me about it all of the time and ask if I’m Icelandic or something but I just really like the sticker. It’s getting a little beat up now, so maybe I’ll ship another one over.

I think I’ll eventually take down my Yellowcake Shop sticker just because it really has no meaning to it. My dad runs a small publishing company so I went to one of his main printers and they had stickers lying out so I just grabbed one. But, it would be cool to go there someday because they have cool stickers so they would probably have good food too.
