Spectacular Strnads: A Closer Look at a Few of HB Seniors’ Projects in Creativity
GATEWAY, A NOVEL BY KATY EVERETT
Passion, hard work and a lot of typing. This basically sums up the project Katy Everett has chosen to tackle for her Strnad. Her novel, titled Gateway, follows the young fallen angel Elandriel along her journey to return home to the Heavens. On her voyage, she meets a young man named Damon, and together, they face off Demons and other equally formidable obstacles. All this, to reach the only passage back home for Elandriel; the Gateway. This thrilling novel was a difficult task to accomplish, says Katie, but as we will see during the upcoming Strnad assembly, it definitely exemplifies her great passion for writing. It may have been hard to meet the many deadlines, and always have a flowing fountain of ideas, but it was also a great experience, being able to see “the world that started in my head, appearing fully formed on paper”.
POTS OF PERFECTION: EMMA STEWART-BATE’S CERAMIC MASTERPIECES
Based on her love of pottery, Emma constructed a project that involved the making of four tea sets based on the Art Nouveau Period in 19th century Europe. The art of this time period was inspired by nature, which is largely why Emma chose the period as a model for her work. Her four sets all have the same structure, but represent different seasons through outer decorations. For example, her fall set includes fall leaves and shades of brown and orange, where as the spring set has brighter colors, and newly bloomed flowers. These beautiful works of art allowed Emma to pursue something she loves, and learn about the historic period, which served as her inspiration.
ARIELLE GOLDBERG’S HEAVENLY HARMONIES
As an experienced flutist and yoga student, Arielle chose to combine her two passions into one project. The main goal of her STRNAD was to organize multiple concerts that will be played by the Cleveland Orchestra and include a beginner’s yoga class for viewers. Through these unique concerts, Arielle aimed to develop her own musical talents by working with the Cleveland Orchestra, and help involve and inspire her community as well. So far, Arielle has faced problems with scheduling, but has enjoyed her experience of creating something that truly incorporates the things that she feels most passionate about.
PASSION FOR PROSE: ALDEN COWAP AND ISABELLE ARNSON EXTEND THEIR LOVE OF WRITING TO THE MIDDLE AND PRIMARY SCHOOL
With such an extraordinary writing program in the upper school, Alden and Isabelle decided to help extend a similar concept to those in the Middle and Primary school. Their STRNAD, which focuses on the study of writing and English, created this project to help HB girls grades 2-8 develop their creative writing skills. “We feel that every student should have the opportunity to expand and explore creative writing, even if they are not one of the few who are distinguished for their excellent writing talents.” said Alden and Isabelle. This STRNAD has allowed both girls to pass on their love of writing to lower grades, and inspire other HB girls to explore their talents.
